Some might bristle at placing an executive layout, with its bevy of par-threes, in any list of top courses. But, short or not, Willow Brook Golf Course in South Windsor, Ct. is a well manicured, player friendly, easy to walk, course.
There has been a lot of talk about building golf courses that beginners, children and seniors can enjoy and not feel intimidated by fellow players or overwhelmed by. Unfortunately, few of these clubs, with the exception of a handful of First Tee mini-courses, have materialized. However, Willow Brook fits the bill.
Greens fees are very affordable, the staff is welcoming and nurturing for beginners and kids, and pros are always ready to instruct and advise. As for walking, this is a stroll in the park, as you can fit in 18 holes in less than three hours.
A more accomplished player will find Willow Brook delightful as well, as it affords plenty of opportunities to work on iron play and the short game. The greens are immaculate and the fairways are as good as those found at some private courses.
There are 13 par-threes measuring from 85 yards to 217 yards and five par-fours, the most difficult of which is the 373-yard finishing hole that bends slightly to the right. The other par-fours are on the short side, which makes them approachable for beginners and fun for better players who can try and drive the green and make eagle. The most demanding par-three is the 217-yard sixth, which asks for a long iron or fairway wood off the tee from accomplished golfers.
Willow Brook was voted the 2017 Course of the Year by the New England Golf Course Owners Association and has won plaudits from various publications.
