Alexander and Peter Ohlson were W.W. II veterans who returned to the family farm in the tiny town of Norton, Mass. They decided to build a golf course and, in 1948, started with a five-hole course. Eventually, they added 4 more holes, and a challenging 9-hole track became available to local golfers.
Changes in ownership added 9 more holes, and today Norton C.C. is a semi-private club that challenges golfers of all handicaps. Tight fairways bordered by pine and oak trees demand accurate tee shots. It is a hefty 6,545 from the tips, and with plenty of traps and foot-high fescue, leave the driver in the bag and put the three-wood to work.
Holes like the 500-yard 4th, followed by the uphill 492-yard 5th, will test your skill. While short holes like the 344-yard 11th and 298-yard 13th are good spots for a hybrid. Twisting fairways and slick greens add to the challenge, but conditions are pristine, so enjoy your day at Norton. And at the end of the day, you can enjoy some food and drink on the spacious deck with a view of the 18th green.
