Award-Winning Boothbay Harbor Country Club
Shines in Coastal Maine

Like a beacon shining in the northern New England, Boothbay Harbor Country Club has become a must see and must play for both locals and visitors to this special region of coastal Maine.

The owner of BHCC, Paul Coulombe, has invested millions of dollars in renovations to the course, a stunning new clubhouse and a new state-of-the-art Wellness Center with fitness center, swimming pool, tennis and pickleball courts. Boothbay Harbor Country Club has been recognized on many levels for its world class design, including Architectural Digest’s esteemed list of the Most Beautiful Clubhouses in America. This award-winning clubhouse with its championship course has undoubtedly become one of the premier golfing destinations in the Northeast.

The entire course was redesigned by Bruce Hepner over the past five seasons, with the initial improvements starting in 2014. The redesign included entirely new green complexes on 14 holes. Many of these green complex changes were part of complete hole redesigns. Sand bunkers on the entire course were reshaped and re-sanded with bunkers added in strategic spots. Gorgeous landscaping and man-made water features are found all over the golf course to hit all of the golfer’s senses.

The changes and additions to the course have created a perfect blend of challenge, playability and beauty. Golfers will also find that the experience is quite comfortable as well with our luxury golf carts, GPS units and air-conditioned comfort stations on holes 4, 9, 14 and 17 holes that provide complimentary bottled water. The new covered patio and deck at the turn aptly named, “Over the Ledge,”

with an elevated view of the 9th and 17th greens is a great spot to grab a bite during the round.

In addition, a new practice facility was built with target areas and sand bunkers. The practice area provides beautiful views of the course with a 20-plus-foot ledge wall bordering the entire left side of the facility. A new short game practice area was built in 2016 that gives golfers the opportunity to practice any short game shot they may encounter on the course.

Opened in May of 2016, says John Suczynski, the club’s President, “The clubhouse provides all the amenities a golfer could want, including an expanded pro shop, enclosed cart storage, men’s and women’s luxurious locker rooms, and an exquisite dining room, Paul’s Steak House, and a 19th hole, Grille 19, that is second to none. The views from the elevated terrace overlooking the emerald green course are truly amazing.”

Suczynski added, “With the opening of our new Wellness Center in 2018, we’ve been able to expand our amenities offered to our members with a pool for all ages, tennis and pickle ball courts, clinics for all levels, massage therapy and fitness training with experienced professionals.”

Voted by Down East magazine as the Best Golf Course in Maine in 2018, at Boothbay Harbor Country Club, says Suczynski, “Golfers will experience a high level of service with impeccable golf course conditions and amenities. The surrounding area has some of the best boating available in the state and the miles of coastline provide beautiful vistas. The Botanical Gardens and shops and restaurants of Boothbay Harbor add something for everyone. Ultimately, the course and surrounding facilities will provide a vacation resort with something for everyone in the family.”

Boothbay Harbor Country Club has become a blend of a fresh, new, impeccably maintained playing surface and practice facility, modern and comprehensive amenities and a long and storied past.

In 1918, Wayne Styles and John Van Kleek, famous course architects of the day, were commissioned to build a golf course on the Boothbay Peninsula by a group of wealthy Boston businessmen to help with tourism in the quaint coastal town. Stiles and Van Kleek have a number of notable courses to their credit in the Northeast, including Prout’s Neck in Maine, Nashua Country Club in New Hampshire, and Thorney Lea Golf Club and Duxbury Yacht Club, both in Massachusetts.

The nine-hole gem designed by the two men expanded to 18 holes in 1999. Successful business owner and philanthropist Paul Coulombe purchased Boothbay Harbor Country Club in 2013 as a way to merge his two loves, golf and the Boothbay Harbor region. He personally financed the reconstruction of the golf course and driving range and is sparing no expense in making the club an unrivaled golfing experience.

Hepner was chosen to undertake the renovation project due to his successful work with famed architect Tom Doak in designing Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand and Streamsong Blue Florida. He also renovated Essex Country Club in Massachusetts, as was as Cape Arundel in Maine.
