“Our new expansion at the resort is ready to open,” reported Chris Zelenka, PGA Professional at the Casino Resort. “We will have 100 new rooms, a 16,000-square-foot meeting and convention center, which will provide a state-of-the-art venue for banquets, concerts and meetings. And we have an amazing team of employees, another one of our core strengths.”

Mount Airy Casino and Resort during the weekdays draws “a lot of locals from northeastern Pennsylvania and during the weekends from New Jersey and New York.”

We’ll get back to the hotel, casino and all the other amenities Mount Airy has to offer in a bit. But let’s talk about the golf course that makes for a perfect stay and play opportunity, along with the 4-Diamond Hotel experience that you won’t soon forget.

“We have an incredible `classic` golf course,” said Zelenka, who is currently in his 10th year at Mount Airy and 40th year in the golf business. “It was designed after 1967 Sports Illustrated Magazine’s `Best 18 Holes in Golf’. So, each hole replicates a famous golf hole in America, from Augusta National, Merion, Baltusrol, and more. For instance, our finishing hole replicates Pebble Beach’s famous 18th hole, a strong par-five.”

Golf Course Architect Hal Purdy designed the course, which plays around 6,500 yards from the tips. There are well-manicured fairways, picturesque views and outstanding golf course conditions expected at private country clubs.

Looks aside, the 72.4/132 rated golf course is a true test of skill for every level golfer that decides to take on the challenge. Numerous ponds, streams, hazards and elevation changes make for a great test to your game.

The first hole is a demanding, 558-yard par five that calls for a precise second shot layup close to a pond to afford a reasonable mid-iron into the green.

The third hole is a very tough, 388-yard par-four that has water along the right side of the fairway and a bunker on the right that must be avoided to set up a comfortable approach shot.

Hole number seven is another challenging par-five, measuring 565 yards from the tips. The tee shot must clear a small pond and the second shot needs to find a narrow fairway and avoid a line of trees on the right to set up a clear third shot to the green.

The ninth hole is a long, 219-yard par-three that has a bunker in front and bunkers guarding the flanks of the green.

The 11th is as short, 337-yard par-four that big hitters can approach off the tee. But they must avoid trees to the right and bunkers that are scattered about.

The 12th hole is a beautiful, 510-yard par-five where golfers can contemplate going for the green in two after a long tee shot. But it’s a carry over wetlands and water, so the smart play may be to lay up to the left side of the green and knock down a wedge into the putting surface.

The 16th is another shortish, 360-yard par-four where the player must get as close to a pond as possible to set up a short iron into the green.

The 17th is a pretty little, 123-yard-par three that is protected by sand traps. The green is long and narrow.

This spring, Mount Airy is offering during weekdays a special where $27 per person gets you 18 holes and a cart. On weekends, it’s $40 per person for 18 holes and a cart.

Because the course itself is on the grounds of Mount Airy Casino and Resort, it means you have a great set of amenities at your disposal before and after your round. The clubhouse has the panache of a private club with a full service bar and restaurant, locker room and shower facility and a fully stocked pro shop that carries most of golf’s major brands. You can enjoy a cold beverage and have lunch on an outdoor patio overlooking a pond and the casino.

The casino has slots, table games and 24/7 fun. With over 70 table games, ranging from blackjack, craps, roulette and Baccarat and over 1,800 slots, you have multiple chances to try your luck. There are ever-changing promotions and tournaments to keep the action hot.
