In a time when many golf courses are being shuttered or transformed into condo complexes, one family, the Collard Family of Collard Realty in Sea Bright, is taking a different swing by lovingly restoring New Jersey’s ‘Friendliest Golf Course’, Gambler Ridge Golf Club, an 18-Hole, Par 71 golf course about an hour from new York and Philadelphia, to its original grandeur.
This hands-on revival is more than just maintenance. It is, in fact, a major reimagining of what a community golf course can be.
The brand new Gambler Ridge, in just about one calendar year, has seen significant improvements in course playability and beauty, an overhaul of its Gambler Bar and Grill with an updated menu and upgraded welcoming atmosphere and expansion of event offerings to include weddings, charity events, corporate outings and community-based celebrations of any, and all, kinds.
“ Our family’s goal is a simple one,” said Megan Collard, Co-Owner of Gambler Ridge. “ It is to preserve open green space, honor the history of the land, and make the sport accessible to all.”
Mission accomplished. Lush fairways, meticulously maintained greens and vast areas of taller fescue Links-Style grass in between holes greens highlight the golf course’s recent transformation. Removal of more than a hundred trees has opened up the course, as well, giving golfers more opportunities while enhancing the air flow around the property, formerly a 19th Century farm.
Always a local’s favorite place to play, including myself, Gambler’s uniquely rare “Risk-Reward” layout has always provided plenty of thrills with tiny Postage Stamp-styled Par 3’s like the hundred yard Par Three 3rd, or medium-to-short length reach-able Par Fours like the Back-to-Back Fifth and Sixth holes, each measuring about 300 yards apiece.
The Closing stretch of Holes 15-18, a Par 4, 5 and then 2 more Par Fours, is another memorable part of the Course. The Par 5 Sixteenth gives long hitters a chance to put for eagle and most other golfers a shot at birdie or par.
