I grew up in Rhode Island and have been playing golf for the last 30 years. However, I never made the trip to Triggs Memorial Golf Course in Providence until 2026. I don’t know why I waited so long because all of the hype and love I heard about it were true. This Donald Ross design has stood the test of time since it opened in 1933.
Championship caliber and full of challenges, this course is on par with any private course in the state. As a municipal course open to the public, it’s a privilege for any golfer who makes the trip.
Hole 14
Triggs uses the property’s natural shape perfectly: subtle elevation changes, smooth landing areas, and classic Ross-designed compact greens guarded by bunkers that make you think before every approach. You have to enjoy playing with strategy but not fear the punishment. You can’t just fire at flags here; you have to think your way around the course, pick your angles, and stay below the hole whenever possible.
When I finished playing, I felt that the course respected my game, but made me earn every stroke. Triggs is a classic Ross that plays honest, inviting, and a brain teaser. This is the type of course that, when you finish, you want to go right back at it for another 18.
