The Shoe Hole 2

A bold new chapter in golf Colonial Williamsburg has begun with the grand opening of “The Shoe,” a 9-hole, par-3 short course that’s already drawing comparisons to icons like The Hay at Pebble Beach and The Cradle at Pinehurst. Designed by Rees Jones, Inc., with project leadership by Greg Muirhead, “The Shoe” brings a vibrant, flexible, fun twist to the game—and marks the only new golf course to open in Virginia in 2025.

A Fast, Fun Test for Every Golfer

Stretching just 760 total yards, with holes ranging from 43 to 137 yards, The Shoe delivers a complete golf experience that seasoned players can finish in under an hour. It’s the perfect warm-up, quick getaway round, or family-friendly introduction to the sport. Each of the nine holes offers a unique mix of challenges that reward creativity and precision, giving players the opportunity to work on different shots in a stunning natural setting.

The course is complemented by a 14,000-square-foot putting green—itself featuring nine holes—inviting guests to linger, practice, or compete in friendly putting matches long after their rounds.

A Legacy Extended

With the addition of The Shoe, the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club now features 45 total holes, joining the acclaimed Gold Course (ranked among America’s Top 75 Public Courses) and the championship-tested Green Course, host to multiple NCAA events. Together, they form one of the most complete and storied golf destinations on the East Coast.

This isn’t the first time Golden Horseshoe has been on the leading edge of innovation. Though a brand with deep historical roots, its courses have long pushed the boundaries of design. The Gold Course, which opened in 1963, was among the first in the nation to feature an island green—a concept that would become a staple of modern golf architecture. The Green Course broke new ground as well: while a resort course, it sits on more than 300 acres completely free of residential development, a rare attribute that allows the natural landscape and strategy of play to shine without distraction.

Each green fee at The Shoe supports the preservation of American history through Colonial Williamsburg Resorts, aligning the joy of golf with a meaningful mission. The timing couldn’t be better: 2025–2026 marks both America’s 250th anniversary and Colonial Williamsburg’s 100th year of inspiring visitors.
